Bringing together geometry and philosophy, this book undertakes a strikingly original study of the origins and significance of the Pythagorean theorem. Thales, whom Aristotle called the first philosopher and who was an older contemporary of Pythagoras, posited the principle of a unity from which all things come, and back into which they return upon dissolution.
Pythagorean metaphysics. I have developed an interest in studying Pythagoras, mainly his idea of Number as the Arche. It seems that neither him nor his school left any writings, and what survives of it comes through Aristotle's and Plato's references in their respective pieces.
At Metaphysics 986a22, after presenting his account of the philosophy of “the so called” Pythagoreans (985b23), which has strong connections to the philosophy of Philolaus, Aristotle turns to “others of this same group” and assigns to them what is commonly known as the table of opposites (the opposites arranged according to column [kata sustoichian]). These Pythagoreans presented the principles of reality as consisting of ten pairs of opposites:
Pythagorean thought deeply influenced Greek philosophy. Aristotle dedicated a portion of his Metaphysics to the subject of the philosophy of numbers, and this recalled the Pythagorean approach to numbers and their meaning.
Pythagoras was already in ancient times well known for the mathematical achievement of the Pythagorean theorem. Pythagoras had discovered that in a right angled triangle the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
